MISC Ship was Hijacked!!!!

Hey guys, do you know that one of the Petroleum Tanker own by MISC was hijacked? (yesterday/few days ago)

It was said the ship was hijacked by a group of Pirates during the ship crossing Somalia.

29 out of 39 crews are Malaysian.

Anyone heard the news?

Pirates hijack MISC tanker

PETALING JAYA:The whereabouts of 29 Malaysians and 10 Filipinos on an MISC Bhd tankers remains unknown since the vessel was hijacked by heavily-armed pirates in the Gulf of Aden on Tuesday.

MISC, the world’s largest single owner and operator of liquefied natural gas tankers, confirmed that its 32,025 dead-weight-tonne chemical tanker Bunga Melati Dua which carried palm oil was hijacked by pirates at 10.09pm local time off the coast of Somalia.

The fully-laden vessel was heading for Rotterdam from Dumai, Sumatra, at the time of the incident.

“All authorities have been notified and we are working closely to render the necessary assistance and support,” MISC said in a statement.

The International Maritime Bureau (IMB)'s Piracy Reporting Centre regional head Noel Choong told The Star that based on “common case scenario” in the area, the pirates would most probably demand ransom for the release of the vessel and crew.

IMB received a distress call late Tuesday and immediately notified a naval ship patrolling the area to intercept the pirates.

“But the pirates had cut all modes of communication and are suspected to have entered Somali waters.

“Pirates in the area usually use firearms such as AK-47, machine-guns and grenade launchers,” he said.

He said this was the fourth piracy case in the same area in a month and IMB called on the United Nations (UN) and the international community to take necessary action to curb the crime.

The UN Security Council has voted to allow international warships to enter Somali waters.

“But, the warships are only allowed to monitor maritime crime such as piracy. They cannot take any physical action,” he said.

The piracy cases in the past month involved a bulk carrier, a tugboat and a general cargo vessel.

Somalia has the longest coastline in Africa of about 3,025km and is near key shipping routes connecting the Red Sea with the Indian Ocean.

The IMB cautioned all vessels transiting the area to take additional precautionary measures.

Obviously i didn't watched Buletin Utama last nite. huhuhu

If....lets say MISC pay the ransom around millions of ringgit/USD, is that going to affect the Bonus for FY 08/09?

bcoz this year punyer bonus already calculate maa..

so this incident will be calculate for next financial year

Solat hajat ini akan dipimpin oleh YBhg Ustaz Muhammad Jim.

Badan Islam MISC mengajak semua kakitangan MISC Berhad muslimin & muslimat khususnya dan semua jemaah surau untuk bersama-sama turut serta dalam Solat Hajat ini untuk bersama sama memohon kepada Allah SWT agar semuanya berada dalam keadaan baik dan selamat seperti sediakala. Insya Allah.

Doa same2 k.. Aku tanye NIK, die cakap kapal tanker tu draft x tinggi..so tu yang lanun senang je naik panjat kapal..

Yang dapat tau tu sebab mgkin officer onboard sempat tekan panik button to info to others that their ship had been hijacked by pirates..

So, wonder maybe the pirates got bazooka, planned to threat to explode the ship.. SO they let the ship to be captured..

SAFETY FIRST!! hehehe

25/08/2008: HIJACKING OF BUNGA MELATI DUA - UPDATE NO. 2

Ladies and gentlemen,

We have been able to establish more communication with the crew of Bunga Melati Dua and are now able to confirm that the fatality onboard involving a Filipino crew member was an accident during the time of boarding of the vessel by the hijackers. All remaining crew members are safe and are taken care of. Negotiations are ongoing to secure the safe release of the crew members.



We have met and briefed the family members of the crew of Bunga Melati Dua, both here in Malaysia and in the Philippines. MISC will continue to provide the necessary assistance and support to the family members.



In the mean time, I ask for all of you to join the family members in prayers in seeking the safe and quick return of the crew of Bunga Melati Dua. I also ask of you to pray for the respective family members to have the strength and courage during this trying period.



I would like to remind all staff that information pertaining to the incident needs to be properly controlled so as not to jeopardize the situation. Please do not speculate into the matter and do not provide any information that may be considered misleading to external parties.
